Subject: [ferrethealth] Blood drawing for Ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My first ferret went to her second vet visit today. Her yearly
wellness exam, vaccinations and I asked the vet to draw blood so we
would have a baseline from her for any upcoming health issues as she
gets older.

She is a year old, spayed, is 20.5 inches long and weighs 735 grams.

With literally five hands restraining her the vet drew blood from
her shaved left haunch.

It took a couple of sticks to actually get blood IN to the needle
and she has a slight bruise with mild swelling at the site and her
hock where he had to hold her firmly. I am not really too concerned
about that, she has full mobility and will heal quickly I'm certain.

My main query is what have been other places where vets have been
known to draw blood and are any spots particularly easy or harder
than another?

After seeing that restraining tube online and how they take blood
from the tail, that was what I was expecting today.

regards, JosiesMom
