We find it to vary some among ferrets. Some have
tougher veins that shift a lot. Some are easy as pie.

Here is the usual routine we go through and the
ferret usually do not mind it:

Shave. (Not always needed if the ferret has a great
veins; our Hilbert is an example of great veins.)

Put on a little numbing gel and wait long enough for
it to work in case more than one stick is needed.

Have one person scruff and also hold front legs
downward over the corner of the examination
table. One or two other people prevent the rear end
from squirming and drip a treat oil from a bottle with
a slow drip top just in front of the ferret. The vet pats
the vein and pokes when it is right.

Over the years we have had only a rare few who
needed to have momentary gas anesthesia for blood
tests, for example, Ashling who had tough but
narrow veins that shifted a lot.
