Subject: [ferrethealth] My Ferret, Sterling. Mystery illness
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I just wanted to let everyone know that Sterling's rabies test came back negative.
I guess it's a mystery that will never be solved.

Pam

That is correct.

One bacterium that can be knocked down by that combo is Helicobacter. Ferrets get a
different species of Helicobacter than humans do. It can cause diarrhea and if it takes off too
badly it can cause ulcers. This bacterium is exceedingly common in ferrets and for most who
have it Helicobacter is a chronic but mostly quiet background infection which can flare at
times and which also can contribute to things like splenic enlargement.

That two med combo is workable for having an effect against Helicobacter infections that are
not bad to knock them down, but is *not* optimal for Helicobacter. Better is to give Biaxin,
Amoxi, and separated from those other meds also Carafate. There is also an older but less
tolerated combo of Amoxi, Flagyl, and Pepto which can be very stressful for ferrets.
