Subject: [ferrethealth] Please read: Is it DIM? Things just keep getting more confusing...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My ferret Burton has been presenting symptoms of DIM over the last week. Fever fluctuating
around 105, normal WBC on Mon the 14, elevated on Fri the 18 (20k), lethargic, had some
nasal discharge on thurs, but none since, decreases appetite, and lethargy. He started out
weak on the hind end, dragging his back legs but since Thurs he has started walking normal
and appears to be getting stronger, to the point where he actually climbed into a hammock in
his cage (with my supervision). Went in today for recheck CBC and muscle biopsy to try and
confirm DIM. Now his CBC is around 5k, but now his PCV is about 24 (I guess anemia is a
sign of DIM as well, but why has his WBC went down???). His fever is still around 105 though,
but again, you would never know watching him that he is sick. he walks great and is in no
pain. His is on amoxi, carafate, and baytril. he gets SQ fluids 2-3 times a day, and is hand fed
duck soup every few hours (he won't eat onhis own, but will eat from my hand). My vet is
consulting with Dr. Ramsell today about whether or not to proceed with the biopsy tomorrow
(an appt is scheduled tomorrow AM). Does anyone have any thoughts on this? What could
cause a high fever, lethargy (probably from the fever), decrease in appetite (probably from
the fever) and weird WBC and PCV? he just doesn't seem sick enough to have DIM, and
unfortunately, the with a PCV like his and having a semi-invasive biopsy, if it is just a regular
old virus, that could make him worse. We are confounded...

Thanks, Amanda
