To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Pepto-Bismol contains salicylates (the product found in aspirin to which
others have referred) which can be poisonous to ferrets. I know because I had a
ferret once who was diagnosed with salicylate poisoning after being prescribed
P-B. He eventually died, partly because of that. I would say death due to
salicylate poisoning is a serious side effect of P-B in ferrets. I have not
used it since and will not. Carafate is a much better choice when presented with
the same indications, but it is by prescription only.
There is an over the counter product made by Lambert Kay called Pet
Pectillin that I have used in the past as an alternative. It contains kaolin and
pectin, the same ingredients the old Kaopectate used to have (Kaopectate now
resembles Pepto-Bismol without the pink color).
