In Australia? There isn't rabies there but there
is another lyssavirus in the classical rabies group,
with a very high rate of genetic similarity to classical
rabies. I do NOT know if ferrets have gotten that.

There was a recent case in Canada with a sweet FHL
member's kit which looked remarkably like rabies
but was not rabies on testing. The kit's neurological
symptoms and breathing difficulties became so
pronounced that there was no choice except a mercy
shot. An older kit is showing mucusy GI symptoms
now so perhaps Lawsonia, but who knows... Lawsonia
can cause of proliferative colitis in older ferrets but
is more severe in younger ones, and it appears that
when central nervous system problems happen with it
(which is very rare) they are more often in young ones.

Anyway, in that discussion a multitude of possible
causes of such symptoms were discussed from
canine distemper through toxins.

Severe pain also has to be considered as a possibility.

I am probably missing some so you will want to also
search on your own, but here is one discussion, and
you may want to check under other topics.
