Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Ferret Vaccine Reactions/IBD
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Luckily, the rabies vaccine is rather UNlikely to cause an allergic reaction (though it certainly
can happen) because rabies is such a serious zoonotic that the testing which would be
needed to show that a vaccine provided more than a year's protection against rabies would
be difficult to finance and arrange.

The work currently going on is on canine distemper vaccines (which are more common
causes or reactions) and getting the titer data over a number of years and from many ferrets
is simply the first step. Then the titer figures will be interpreted taking what is known from
dog studies, and after that challenge studies will be done to make sure that the numbers
really mean what they seem to mean. When those steps have been finished then it will be
known well enough what spacing can be used with the vaccines still being effective. At this
point there is preliminary data, but it needs to be rigorously challenged with further testing
and inquiry so that the results can be reliable.
