In my own business I am exposed to hundreds( if not thousands) of
life threatening bacterium. I think that the key to avoiding a
problem with one of them overtaking me ( or my pet) is to keep our
immune system in tip top shape.

Every organism on this planet fights for survival - whether it is a
single cell or a multi celled organism. Only when one is compromised
in some way, will the other gain the upper hand.

I am of the mind that the more things we get exposed to, the more
things our immune systems can prepare against. I feel the same holds
true for my ferret.

If I was afraid that she would succomb to some sort of bacterium
she'd never experience an outdoor excursion or have fun digging in
the dirt!

Ever notice how it seems that the kids in the neighborhood who are
always eating mud pies never seem to get sick? Yet the ones with
Moms who constantly disinfect them are always at the doctors with
the kids?

Do I let Josie roll around in dog poo or dig where cats have
excreted or let her dawdle on bird dropping covered docks or dig in
horse manure piles? No, certainly not. But does that mean she is
safe from an infection? Nope, I realize that these bacterium are
everywhere and I even have them in my own home.

I don't see this as a defeatist attitude - just pragmatic - worry
when its necessary, don't worry about things we cannot control or
limit experiences because of what "might" happen; keep their immune
system as bolstered as possible and hope for the best!

regards, JosiesMom
