I have a female ferret that was adopted from the spca who is fixed.
she is about a year old. well tonight durring play time i noticed that
her gentials were swollen but she has no other signs of being adrenal
or any other thing that could be wrong. and ideas as to what could
have caused the swelling with he gentials?/ worried ferret parents
here... please give ideas
jasmine and the amazing 9"
She could certainly be adrenal, despite having no other symptoms, and she may also have had an incomplete spay, where perhaps a remnant, or part of an ovary was left behind. I'd recommend a U. of Tennessee Adrenal panel and a visit to your vet; if the test comes back positive, an exploratory with or without a pre-surgery ultrasound may be indicated; an exploratory would also give your vet a chance to look for ovarian remnants even in the absence of increased adrenal-symptom-causing hormones in your UTenn test results.
These would be the most likely causes of swollen genitals, but your vet may be able to provide other ideas. Less likely would be irritation and swelling related to a urinary tract infection, for example; but I really think the other two scenarios are far more likely.
Best,
April (vet tech and ferret owner)
