Subject: [ferrethealth] Ingesting estrogen from prey?
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

That is a good theory, but I am not sure how true. We just don't know whey ferrets get adrenal gland disease. One hypothesis is it is the stress levels the ferret is under ( housing, larger groups, stressors like being caged, etc), another is the early spay and neuter plays a role, and photoperiods seem to also play an important role. I forget how, but photoperiods somehow go back to stimulation of gonadtotropins and sex hormone production. I am sure genetics also plays a role. Why would male ferrets get adrenal with increased estrogen production as the primary type the tumor or hypertrophied gland produces ? Why not always testosterone producing kind? some intact ferrets have still gotten adrenal gland disease.

I don't think we have enough answers, but it is probably multifactoral and early spays/neuters do seem to be a trigger.

I don't know of any studies using estrogen to protect from adrenal gland disease, but I know of some using lupron early on/and or melatonin implants. I am not sure the long term outcomes of these studies. I am not a vet, and probably am not understanding the ways that adrenal gland disease develops and why.

AS I understand it, the adrenal gland will attempt to make up for a
LOT of other hormones produced elsewhere in the body if they cannot
be produced normally.

I guess, that is why I am wondering - if the adrenal gland didn't
get triggered to produce these other hormones would that then be a
way to prevent adrenal (or some of them) issues?

Hmmm, regards, JosiesMom
