Sandra,

I wish I could tell you there was a hard-and-fast answer on this, but there isn't. Every situation is different - each animal has a different personality and pain tolerance level, each medical condition is different, each owner's ability to handle meds is different, etc. If you have a vet you trust, talk with them, ask their opinion about this situation - particulary about the pain level.

Personally, as long as the animal is not obviously in a huge amount of pain, and they are still finding some enjoyment in life (playing, grooming, begging for treats or something else), I would not look at a final trip to the vet's. But my husband is at home all day most days, so he can take care of my ferts, and if he couldn't, I have a job where I can bring one or two with me to work in a carry cage. Those two factors are huge, and I know I'm lucky.

I wish you the best of luck with this difficult decision, and know that when the time is right and you let him go, he will be dooking at the bridge and waiting for you.

Debbie
