Dear Anitta,

I can only speak from experience, but when Rhett was
diagnosed with this disease both vets involved in his
care where extemely concerned about my other ferrets
(about 20 at the time I believe) would become ill.
They suggested I quarantine Rhett. I considered this,
but it seemed to me that it was a case of "closing the
barn door after the horse has gotten out," so I did
not quarantine him. Once we knew what was going on he
was on high dose antibiotics including Rifampin. None
of my other ferrets ever got sick.

Obviously, this is not definitive proof that ferrets
cannot transfer the disease between animals, but it
does seem to indicate that it is not as transferable
as many were concerned it would be.

Again from my experience, if other ferrets were only
exposed during a show I would think it would be very
unlikely they would have caught it. Of course if an
animal was already sick from some other disease, or
very stressed out at being at a show, their risk would
increase.

If I was personally in this situation (been to a show
where one of the animals was diagnosed with MAC) I
would watch my ferrets a little more closely, but I
certainly would not be really worried at all.
