Subject: [ferrethealth] Neck mass
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello, I have two ferrets. I noticed a neck mass on the female on
Friday night. On Saturday I called the vet, only to find that my usual
vet is out on vacation. I saw a diferent vet who doesn't think that the
mass is a lymph node, and in fact can palpate the lymph nodes beneath
the mass. He says the lymph nodes are normal. She will be 2 years old
in Aug. She is a Marshall Farms ferret. No change in behavior. Still
eats and excretes normally. Energy level is normal. This mass is
irregular in shape, sort of oblong, very firm, and can be moved. She
doesn't show any signs of discomfort when palpating the mass. It is
fairly large, however. The vet tried twice to get a needle aspirate
biopsy, with no sucess while she was awake. He suggested giving her gas
to obtain sample. However, I declined. First because I do not believe
that he would get a sample with a needle from such a firm mass. Second
because, I am not confident in his knowledge and treatment of ferrets.
I asked if we would be able to proceed from needle biopsy to open punch
biopsy, if he were not able to otain a sufficient sample once she was
asleep. Of course, he did not have the time for that at the appointment
time. Has anyone seen anything simular or have any suggestions for me?
Thank you. Carrie
