A ferret that boarded at my place had a scar from a burn after being
placed on a heating pad at the vet's post op.
The owner told me that it wasn't immediately obvious but the ferret
was rushed back to the vet's when a scab peeled from her side after
about 4 days (from memory...it was a few years ago). I spoke with
the vet about it and found that the heating pad was not on a
particularly high setting, but apparently still managed to burn the
ferret's skin through her fur by the heat being applied for too
long. The vet banned the use of the heating pads from his surgery
after that and just used hot water bottles filled with warm water
from the tap for his post op ferrets. Even so, when I went to pick
up one of my girls after being sterilized, she was on a water bottle
and, even though she was not yet conscious, she was puffing like a
steam train from over-heating.
I'd say that a ferret could certainly get burnt from heated rice bags
and any ferret that is on or near any warming device needs to be
monitored carefully.
