Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: possible juvenile lymphoma?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Debi,
I wish I could get that work done right now, but my shelter vet is out
of town, and none of the other vets in my area deal with ferrets and
none of them are willing to learn, its sad really. Why is that
everytime something goes wrong, the vet is out of town? It's one of
those baffling mysteries I guess. I've tried and tried to convince
local vets to learn about ferrets but with no luck. I even passed out
flyers for the symposium and none were interested. We do have
Washington State University 8 miles away, but their vets are horrible
and they refuse to drop their incredibly high prices for shelters. I
know several people who have taken ferrets there in the past, were
charged close to $1000 for adrenal surgery, which is outrageous in our
area, where $300 is the highest I've seen. They also have a history
for misdiagnosing ferrets and they really don't have any exotic vets
that actually deal much with ferrets. So not a place I want to take
my own ferrets or shelter ferrets.
A couple people/shelters have suggested that maybe it is some sort of
virus and recommended that I keep him on antibiotics for 2 weeks to
see if that helps, so I figure I'll try that out first. If that
doesn't help at all, then I'll go on from there. It doesn't seem like
a virus though, usually viruses seem to cause runny poop, and he's
still pooping normal. If he does end up having juvenile lymphoma, we
will probably end up getting him necropsied after he dies. We try to
do that with shelter ferrets that have interesting medical histories.
Some people think doing a necropsy is horrid, but you can learn so
much by doing one. We're learned so much in the past from it.
I guess when it rains it pours. I run a small rescue and only have 8
ferrets currently at the shelter, 1 has this problem, 1 is waiting for
adrenal surgery, 1 has bad ulcers, and 2 were severely abused and
neglected and want to kill everything. At least the symposium is
coming up, so that will be a couple day vacation for us.
Thanks for everyone's help, both on the group and off the group.
