Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:pumpkin for ferrets on pred for GI problem
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I always (under direction of my vet) add pumpkin to
any "mush" mix of food, and especially for ferrets
with diarrhea. Pumpkin is a food- it does not
interfere with any meds that I have ever heard of.

On the other hand, I personally have not had good
experiences using oral pred with my ferrets. It has
seemed to me to be very rough on their GI systems. I
use injectible Dexamethasone instead (again with my
vet's approval). And while I have read some places
that Pred may stay in the system longer, my personal
experience is that Dex seems to last longer. For
example, right now I have a rescue with about a 2 year
history of pretty severe IBD (totally liquid diarrhea
without meds). For about 4-5 months now I have been
able to maintain him on .1 ml of Dex (2mg/ml) every
3-4 days.

If you run into problems with the Pred you may want to
discuss this option of using Dex with your vet.

I know some people hesitate using Dex because it
should be given intramuscularly (IM). A couple things
to say about this: 1) I use a very fine -27 gage-
needle, and I don't have a problem giving these
injections IM in my ferret's thighs 2) I have a friend
who operates a large shelter who always gives it sub
q, and she says she's never had a problem. I did once
have the area turn scabby (it healed on it's own
quickly and with no intervention), but since then I
have mostly used it IM. In the times with a really
wiggly ferret I've used it subq since then, no more
problems.

AGAIN< I AM NOT A VET, discuss this with yours, but
this has been my experience over 20 years.

Val
