Subject: [ferrethealth] urine drinking
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have had three adrenal ferrets who drank urine-I would check this ferret out for adrenal disease with a UTenn panel among the other things your vet recommends. It was the ONLY real symptom in two of my three, though it is not the most common of symptoms. He may just have a UTI and be licking his penis because it irritates him, but especially if he is frankly drinking urine, by all means test a urinalysis and some bloodwork, but also see about an adrenal panel.
Diabetes can happen in ferrets, though it is not common, and is most often seen after surgeries to deal with insulinoma (my Daisy recently had a few weeks of a diabetic incident, and her partial pancreatectomy was two years ago. Fortunately, this has resolved.)
Best,
April (vet tech and ferret owner)
