Subject: [ferrethealth] getting a ferret eating regular diet after insulinoma treatment
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi, I have an appx 5 yo male ferret, River, who was diagnosed with insulinoma back in Feb. We did a chemo protocol on him, which he completed in April.

While he was going thru treatment, I had been feeding him around the clock special feedings (mushed up kibble mixed with baby food or Bob C's chicken gravy). He just had a glucose test done, fasted for 5 1/2 hrs, and the reading came back as 82. While I know that is not great... its ok. He also did not have anything to eat overnite prior to the test... I fed him at 12:30am, left the kibble out overnite to see if he would eat on his own, he didnt, so I fed him his soup mush at 9am, then the glucose test was at 2:30pm... So I'm not sure if that affected the results with him eating so sparingly like that??

Anyways, the problem I am having is, trying to get him to eat his regular kibble on his own. He used to love watered down kibble (kibble in a little bit of water), but now its a battle to get him to eat even just that. He wants his baby food or Bob C's mush. This has been awful on his teeth, I have been brushing his teeth constantly, which he also hates, which is another reason to get him back on kibble.

I've had to seperate him from his other ferret buddy, so I could monitor what he is eating, which is nothing on his own! I've tried hiding kibble, putting it in one of those treat balls, leaving it out watered down...

Does anyone have any suggestions? While I certainly wouldnt mind feeding him around the clock if he was sick... I think he's just being stubborn at this point. Like I said, he used to love his regular kibble and watered down kibble, but he's holding out for the 'special stuff'. While I know kibble isnt great for his teeth, the gravy and bf is worse!

Please if anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Andrea
