Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: getting a ferret eating regular diet after insulinoma treatment
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Andrea, it's a popular misconception that kibble keeps teeth clean.
In fact the opposite is true: It erodes the teeth and causes cracks
that allow the access of bacteria directly into the bloodstream.
There is overwhelming evidence that insulinoma is caused by the
excess carbs in kibble.
I sometimes wonder if ferrets that are cursed with insulinoma know,
at some level, that kibble is not good for them.
If River was my ferret, I would start adding tiny bits of raw chicken
to his BC gravy and, as he accepts it, increase the size of the meat
while reducing the amount of BCG until he graduates to raw chicken on
edible-sized bone. Raw chicken on the bone will certainly keep his
teeth clean. To make sure his diet is well ballanced, you could add
occasional offal to his diet. (Although meat and the minerals in the
bones do provide most of the nutrients for an adult ferret and they
can thrive on that alone.)
I wish you and River all the best.
Shirley

feeding him around the clock if he was sick... I think he's just
being stubborn at this point. Like I said, he used to love his
regular kibble and watered down kibble, but he's holding out for
the 'special stuff'. While I know kibble isnt great for his teeth,
the gravy and bf is worse!
