I am not a vet. I the best treatment I have found for rattail is
Revolution. A treatment every two weeks for three treatments will cause
the organism, whatever it is, to die and you can scrub the blackheads
right off with shampoo and a handbrush or toothbrush. Some of the
blackheads will have skin grown over them and wont scrub off, but you
can take a toothpick and pick it out. Afterwards, a regular monthly
treatment with Revolution will prevent the rattail from coming back. I
don't know what the organism is that causes it, but Revolution gets into
the blood stream and can reach the organism clear down to the bottom of
the pores. I had repeated outbreaks of rattail until I read about the
Revolution treatment. I've never had another case of rattail since.
