Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Delayed reaction to distemper shot
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I think that Patty put it perfectly when she said that the real question is whether THIS ferret
needs to be vaccinated against canine distemper so let's look at some of the factors.

1. What was the nature of the delayed reaction and what medical care did the ferret need?
Meds? Which meds? Oxygen? Etc.

If this was a severe reaction and clearly an allergic reaction instead of just the draggy feeling
that is caused by the immune system responding as it *should* to a vaccine then real care is
needed. Individuals in any species who have delayed true anaphylactic reactions are rare and
require special caution.

2. Has the ferret reacted to any other vaccines? In what way?

3. Have you considered a different vaccine (Galaxy if used Purevax, Purevax if used Galaxy)?

4. Is the ferret exposed to high contagion situations? (Do you work around rescue animals?
Is your area having a lot of CD now? Do you walk in wildlife areas and bring your shoes
inside? You get the idea...
