Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Delayed reaction to distemper shot
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Unfortunately the do need distemper shots, though I
don't think we really know if a yearly booster is
really necessary. As someone has already mentioned,
distemper is a horrible, fatal disease you don't want
to risk.

I can offer what I do (I self vaccinate for distemper
as shelter operator):
1) I always make sure I have rescue meds handy:
epinephrine, benadryl and dexamethasone- all
injectible. It's not a bad idea to keep a bottle of
children's Benadryl syrup in your ferret emergency kit
even if you don't vaccinate yourself.
2) I only do it when I know my vet is in her office in
case I have a problem
3) I pretreat my ferrets with benadryl syrup
4) I use Galaxy D which I have had a much lower
reaction rate
5)personally, I will not re-vaccinate a ferret who has
had an anyphylactic reaction, but that's a decision
you need to make with your vet

I AM NOT ADVOCATING SELF VACCINATION! Just saying what
I do, to give you some ideas that you can talk to your
vet about.
