Subject: [ferrethealth] Anemia Question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have searched the FHL archives and couldn't find anything really
related to the situation I have. Here's my situation.

I got a ferret surrendered last night that is 6+ years old, not sure
on the exact age, but we can tell by the teeth that she's at least 6.
She was abused by the owner's kids, attacked by 2 younger ferrets,
and was fed the cheapest cat food on the market. She was very
underweight, all skin and bones. She has problems walking because she
is so weak and is very very anemic. So bad that her gums were white,
no pink in them at all. She's been depressed and stressed since
earlier this year when she watched her cagemate die a horrific death
by her owners, they actually admitted to all that. She doesn't have
any signs of the obvious problems ferrets have. No signs of adrenal
or lymphoma. Since she's been on higher quality food, she's been
pooping and peeing normal, and eating and drinking like crazy.

So my question is, can severe anemia be caused by malnutrition,
stress, and abuse?

We're been giving her extra iron and her gums are finally starting to
get a little color in them, so that seems to be helping. She also is
gaining some strength and is able to move a bit better.

If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them.

Cathy
