Subject: [ferrethealth] Confusing symptoms & bloodwork came back "fine"
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone..

My 2.5yr old male ferret, Tocho, was acting strangely yesterday. For
clarity I'm putting his symptoms in a list below. The trip to the vet
and several hours of him staying there didn't tell us what's wrong.
He's home, but still SO not acting right at all. Bloodwork and stool
check showed nothing amiss according to the vet. However, when I
first got him to the vet his temp was elevated, but they took his
blanket away and kept taking his temp every 20-30min and it steadily
went down and was normal when we took it again last night. I'm
thinking that may have been from the car ride over there. I had to
hold him because he was in a panic for some reason in his carrier.

Symptoms...

1. VERY lethargic
2. pooping very very little (little soft dabs)
3. peeing yesterday only about 1 or 2 tsp (judging by how it looked on
the wood floor (he won't use a litter pan).
4. Sleeping far more than usual.
5. Avoiding his brother and sister. If they came near he would scurry
away and hide under the bed, etc.
6. Would lay in my arms quietly for a long time... SO not like him.
7. Not playing at all. His usual play behavior is VERY active and happy.

Today I noticed something else as well, but I could have possibly just
missed this yesterday.... he has a runny nose. I discovered this when
I saw him go down to the bottom of the cage this morning before
letting them out. He went down to go potty, which was still just the
tiniest dab, and I didn't see any pee at all, but when he was done he
looked up at me and I could see his nose was runny, especially on one
side. He licked his nose (like a cow would do) and then gagged.

Our vet couldn't find anything specific wrong with him, and though he
initially was going to give him antibiotics because his temp was up
when he first arrived, but since it came down steadily to normal and
held while there... he decided against the antibiotics after all.

Reading the archives regarding the straining to pee issue, I'm
"thinking" this is what he was doing yesterday when I first noticed
that he was trying to go and couldn't seem to. His stool was a bit
squishy and very little of it, but he kept trying to go and dragging
his bottom around. That first time when it looked like only a
teaspoon of pee I could see his muscles working in his sides as if he
were going a lot.

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.
I'm stumped, the vet's stumped....

Thanks so much.
Ella
