What we do is we arrange for a vet tech to pet sit. Typically we try to have the person come
over twice a day when possible though that is not always possible.

We also leave "Permission to treat" letters with our vet and a copy with the sitter.

There are all sorts of things which can go wrong and people who haven't been there tend to
think of the most dire, but more common are things like the ferrets toppling all of the water
and that is a horrible way to go, or beginning the too common problem of insulinoma and
resulting low blood sugar and having convulsions with no one there to get help, or even just
being so lonely that the ferret stops eating, or even losing power and having the place get
too hot. Dumping the water, no matter what approach you try is just incredibly common for
ferrets on their own -- far too common to ignore.

Having someone who is a trained tech pop in allows the ferret to be home, and having that
letter with permission to treat can save a ferret's life in an emergency.

Call your vet hospital and ask if any of the techs or past tech pet sit.

Of course, if you are traveling by car and can take the ferrets people can pass on safe
traveling tips and can tell you how to find lists of motels, hotels, campsites, etc. that allow
pets.
