Subject: [ferrethealth] Female ferret not urinating...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello, I'm Leia, and my boyfriend and I reccently adopted a rescued
ferret from my vet clinic named Savannah. She is between 1-3 years of
age. I was told she was probably on the younger side. She was, I am
told, hit by a car and was brought to the vet clinic who could not
find her owners. Other than some swelling and some pain in her back
legs she was given the all clear to come home with me. She was also
very overweight. I put her on a ferret specific food, Shepard and
Green, it was the first food we tried and could actualy get her to
eat. I hope to switch her to a mix of higher quality foods soon. She
is no longer flabby :) and eats and drinks like she is supposed to.
We took her to the vet because I was concerned that her belly was
very large and hard. We did X-rays and the vet determined that the
swelling was caused by her bladder. She sedated Savnnah and drained
200CC's of urine from the bladder. It had a teeney tiny amount of
blood in it but showed no signs of stones or obvious infection. We
did another set of X-rays could find nothing that would give us any
clues as to what the problem was. We were sent home with antibiotics
just in case and insrtuctions to keep and eye on Savannah's toilet
habits and her tummy. She was rechecked by the vet the next day and
her bladder was empty. About Thursday I stated wondering if it was
filling up again but thought I might be imagining it since I could
tell she was still urinating - white paper towel in the litter box.
By Saturday evening it was pretty obvious that she was no longer
urinating normaly and her tummy was definitly getting bigger and
starting to get firm. Saturday night we observed her trying to potty
in a corner of my kitchen and when I went to clean up there was
nothing there. Savannah went back to the vet today and again had to
have her bladder drained. This time it was 106 CC's. Again there was
blood, but no white blood cells and today there was also glucose. The
vet did a full blood work up and found nothing. Our vet is just as
frustrated as we are. Both the vet and I are looking anywhere and
everywhere we can for answers or suggestions. My boyfriend and I as
well as most of the staff at the clinic have really fallen in love
with Savannah. She is just the best ferret, a little angel. BTW, Our
vet does have experience with ferrets but has never seen this sort of
problem in a ferret.
Aside from possiable advice on Savannah's condition I am also looking
anything I can do at home to perhaps make her more comfortable or
help her go tot he bathroom easier?
