Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Female ferret not urinating...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I am worried about possible neural damage, but
also wondering if the urine pH has been checked.
There are two types of the uroliths ferrets can get
which wrong pH can point to:
struvite ones with a too high (alkaline) pH
or
cystine ones with a too low (acidic) pH
Ferret urine should run from about 6.5 to 7.5 in
percent Hydrogen (pH)
You can even do this at home with a very inexpensive
urine pH strip from your vet.
I'm not a vet, though, and this one is a puzzler.
Keep draining the bladder as needed, of course.
Is there a chance that the problem is lower down, as
in a prolapsed urethra? Sometimes a displacement
of the bladder in human women can cause that and
there are several treatments, the most common
being a stretching of the urethra with an intubation
that allows it to pop back in instead of being partly
turned inside out a fix (which might be either
permanent or temporary depending on the situation).
(It's a problem a family member has.)
Something rare which can cause such symptoms at
times is a bladder diverticulum. That is when the
tubing which had allowed the bladder to drain in the
fetus does not disappear and smooth down to mesh
well with the rest of the bladder but instead forms a
pouch extending from the bladder which can set the
stage for a number of problems if it remains.
