Subject: [ferrethealth] Grissoms' incision dehisced
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
yesterday afternoon my little guy, who had a splenectomy last
Thursday, went to the litter box, strained, and his incision opened
and his bowel came out. I picked him up, put a moist gauze pad on it,
wrapped him up, went out and got a neighbor to rush us to the vet. He
is back home after emergency surgery. Our vet said his bowel stayed
pink, was irrigated in surgery, and she closed him with interupted
sutures and vetglue on the knots and over the suture line. He is on
amox, has already pooped and urinated and this morning and afternoon
eating and drinking. He has slowed down on the eating but is lapping
up carnivore care. I am watching him like a hawk, but must return to
work tomorrow. He is in a one level hospital cage with towels and
blankets and a litter box. He is sleeping alot but alert when awake,
seems to be sleeping more this afternoon, but maybe I am paranoid. Has
this happened to anyone else? What else besides fever and lethargy,
and straining, should I watch for?
