This sounds very like something my late senior ferret Buffy had - it
started off as a lump which we thought was a cyst, but a biopsy
revealed it to be a tumour. Due to her age and heart problems we
decided not to operate, but it was messy and never properly scabbed
over - she'd keep licking it off. My suggestion would be to operate -
if Buffy had been up to the operation it would have been the best
thing to do.
