Dear Nancy: A digital picture would certainly help, but I am
thinking about two possibilities when you mention the word "brain",
Sebaceous epitheliomas tend to grow outward and have a warty
appearance. They tend to scab and bleed, and would not be
unexpected in this area. The other possibility would be a cyst of
the scent glands of the tail - these usually are very thin-walled,
fluid filled, and tend to rupture easily.
Either way, surgical removal is probably warranted. If the tumor
does not involve bone, amputation of the tail is probably not
necessary.
