Subject: [ferrethealth] MegaEsophagus Symptoms
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have had two ferrets with MegaE over the years. Both came to me
after they had lost substantial weight and the disease was advanced.
I would recognize the disease in the late stages.

What I need to know is what those owners with megaE ferrets saw with
their ferrets early in the disease. I have a 4.5 year old male that
has lost about 7 ounces since March or April, has gone completely off
his normal food, and recently started frantically digging in water
bowls, trying to drink, gagging and pawing his mouth raw. BG is very
good.

We have had to resort to hand feeding, sometimes with a syringe, the
last week or so. Tonight he acted like he was afraid of the food,
and tried to 'escape' my lap. I did manage to get a feeding down him
once I held him vertically in my arms with his head high and the
dropper above his head. He ate his whole serving. I did not hear
the typical sounds a megaE ferret will make, however, I don't know if
those signs are present early in the disease.

If you have had a ferret with MegaE and had them during the early
stages of the illness, I would appreciate any insight you can give me
about the early signs and symptoms you saw.

Thanks!
Julie
