When in doubt, throw it out.

If the food has been open for a year then toss it.

If not, then look for an expiration date, and if there is no expiration date look for the
manufacturer's "contact us" info on their website and send all the numbers on the bag and
the storage conditions so that they can tell you if you should throw it or not.

Most likely, you'll have to throw it away, I suspect.

I'm not a big one for ignoring expiration dates; a very elderly aunt and uncle in another state
who were extremely dear to me decided a few years ago to self-medicate for an illness and
used expired drugs -- at least that is the conclusion one of their geriatric physicians came
to. In both there was sudden dementia and my uncle also suffered sudden onset of extreme
tremors and was mostly bed-bound from then on. Both had some personality changes. It
was a long and terrible last few years for them and for all of us who loved them.

Food that goes bad can have everything from molds which can do neural damage to toxins
from an assortment of bacteria.
