Subject: [ferrethealth] Feeding new kit
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Ferrets are sensory animals and do not switch foods easily. Kits
should accept the food they were eating at the pet store. Marshall
kits should be fed Marshall ferret food or the guarantee is void,
moistened with warm water till they can easily eat hard food. Some
pet stores don't feed Marshall so be sure to ask what they are
feeding and watch closely to see if the kit is eating when you get
the little one home.
If the kit is younger, you can mix in some KMR or Esbilac
replacement milk with the kibble and warm water. Another addition
is meat and gravy (not vegetable), turkey is my preference, baby
food.
Kits should eat a lot. Also watch to make sure kits are eliminating
normally. Sometimes kits will chew on bedding in the stores and
might get a blockage.
Ask if the pet store allow one free vet visit. This isn't typically
advertised so you have to ask and the last time I did there was a 3
day time limit on using the free visit.
Bottom line is that kits eat a lot, if food is switched they won't
know what it is and won't eat it. They might eat a kibble or two
now and again but they need much more than that to grow healthy and
strong and not get sick.
