Subject: [ferrethealth] Our experience with vaccines, Bear now on lupron & amoxicillin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi all,
Long time been quiet again, mom of Pax and Bear. This information can
be found throughout here, but I want to share what we do in our
household for ALL vaccines for all critters.
We separate rabies from distemper for all of them, not just Bear, who
has had a reaction in the past. Right now, it's only a month of
separation, but with any additional animals, I would probably set up a
six month rotation so that they are being seen by the vet twice a year
rather than over the span of only one month.
The ferts get dropped off in the morning. They treat Bear with
benadryl, then wait about an hour for it to have plenty of time to go
into effect. Then they are vaccinated, and they spend the rest of the
day hanging out and getting loved on by the techs. We also do this
early in the week so that there is not any issue of having an
extremely delayed reaction when no care is available. We are fortunate
here to have our vet's home and cell numbers and an all-hours
emergency care within twenty minutes of driving.
It has been about four years now since Bear's reaction, and we have
not had another, knock on wood. Of course, there have been cases of
benadryl pretreatment that still result in a reaction. Rabies is
required by law and having the documentation in case of a bite can
save the animal's life, and both distemper and rabies are fatal to
ferrets. It's a balancing act, for sure.
Pax had an "explosive anal gland" removed about this time last year
and is doing well. Both have had mast cell tumors removed in the past
year. Bear right now is having adrenal issues again. His left was
removed three years ago. He'll be seven this October, so I don't know
right now if we want to go through surgery with him again or not. At
the moment, his prostate has become swollen. We took him in today
because he has been having trouble urinating. They took out 80 mls of
murky urine by needle and his face looked so much relieved. He
received a lupron shot and we have some amoxicillin in case any bugs
were festering in the pool.
I have read here that no one has ever been aware of any reactions to
lupron, which is a relief to me. I think he is reacting to the
amoxicillin. He vomited soon after dosage, and has since become
lethargic, but is responsive (when he had is vaccine rxn, it was his
complete unresponsiveness that scared me so). We have a message in to
the vet to check, and dad is sitting with him to make sure he remains
responsive. The only other time I can think of that he might have ever
had amoxicillin before was possibly when he had his adrenal surgery.
So I wonder if this poor little sensitive thing is reacting badly to
it now.
Any recommendations for something to use other than amoxicillin to
deal with staving off a bladder infection? His urinalysis will come in
this weekend and we are not expecting that he actually has an
infection, but the vet wanted to be on the safe side. Perhaps it will
come back with no bugs and we can just skip the rest of the dosing.
Thanks all for being such a great bunch of folks dedicated to fuzzy
health.
Maureen, Bear, & Pax
