Ella, is there any possibility it may be a problem with his jaw? He has some of the symptoms that Romeo had a while back and when the vet xrayed his head it was found that he had arthritis in his jaw which made it hurt when he tried to eat the hard kibble. He has been on Metacam since and is eating some hard kibble now although I still supplement it with softened kibble and he is gaining back his weight. Just a thought.
