Subject: [ferrethealth] possible diagnosis of prion disease from blood manganese levels
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Ferrets get the same prion disease as mink (transmissible mink
encephalopathy) and can contract it from eating infected tissues.
Luckily, it is very rare, but when it happens again I hope that they
see if looking at manganese levels shows a possible route to
diagnosis in ferrets with prion disease, too. (Mostly, I hope that
an easier way to find the disease even earlier will keep all,
including ferrets, safer.)
