One more thought I forgot to mention... I don't know what ferret feeding habits you have (probably not that different from ours if you got your ferrets from countries so close to each other) but one of the reasons (besides many others, of course) why we see such problems here in Hungary is that many people believe in that "animals know what is good for them and what is not", liver and heart contains certain vitamins in high dose and since most cats and ferrets love them, they give them far too often. (I even know litters who got nothing else but these two at the "breeder".) Which often ends up in symptoms that you described. Quite often with fatal ending. :(
The other most common reason is, of course, the strict meat diet, which does not provide enough calcium for the kits andtheir mother...
