Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Problems with the kits
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I would normally think this was a genetic problem (and
it may be) but the fact that the mother had a "calcium
breakdown" makes me wonder if it's not nutritional.
Can you specify exactly what you were feeding the
mother and kits? If it is a commercial food that is
not from the US (sorry, not sure what country you are
from) can you please specify the ingredients? And also
exactly what you mean by a "calcium breakdown"?

I did have one breeder ferret that had a genetic bone
problem with her ribs, but this did not cause problems
until she was about 2.

I have had several ferrets that needed rods implanted
due to leg fractures, and all did quite well. BUT if
in this case the actual mechanism to form bone is not
working in the kits, you probably are only prolonging
the kits suffering.

I agree with your vet and Debi that the one kit had
all the classic signs of a heart attack. If it had
been a respiratory problem death would not have
occured that suddenly. You may have heard wheezing or
fluid in the chest prior to this due to pulmonary
edema that would be caused by a heart problem.

I am very sorry you are going through this. I have 10
week old kits right now, and my heart really goes out
to you.
