The first thing that came to my mind was cutaneous
lymphoma, but there are other possibilities, too.

Doing some skin biopsies would make sense, I suspect.
It is how we got the final word on Hilbert's unusual
problem. He has some allergies and when they kick up
he gets secondary bacterial infections and we go on a
quest to try to find out what he is reacting to "this" time.
This may surprise some: he smells adrenal when this is
going on but every time we TN Panel him and then
medically treat while awaiting results and it really is part
of his allergic response that he smells adrenal, even more
so if infection sets in but then there also begins being
infection smell.)

All of these have multiple posts about them in the archives at

http://ferrethealth.org/archive/

so I just pulled a few because the archives are so easy to
use that you'll find it comfy to just jump right in. The dates
of the posts are right on them in their headers, BTW.

Some possibilities (and some of these links mention others):

Pemphigus
(BTW, there is some new work on autoimmune diseases
mentioned in an article on microchimerism on page 30 of
the July 2007 Scientific American. If appears that in at least
some types of autoimmune disease the problem might not
be "auto" (self) at all, but could possibly be retained maternal
cell lines or retained cell lines from placenta sharing
co-inhabitants of the uterus, both kept from when a fetus. So,
marmosets, because they do not react to microchimerism with
an attack mode are under study for an range of questions.)

(There are more.)

Bacterial infection secondary to an allergy
Do skin biopsies.

Cutaneous Lymphoma
Also think about skin biopsies.

I am also wondering if this ferret might have adrenal disease
or another underlying disease with secondary problems.
Insulinoma can sometimes cause paws to become bright red
on and off, BTW.
