Jenni,

I would consider the three main possibilities here to be: pemphigus,
sarcoptic mange, and cutaneous lymphoma, much as Sukie has mentioned
already.

The only one of these I have direct experience with is cutaneous
lymphoma. My ferret Nana had that. It takes a skin biopsy to
diagnose it, and in a frustrating case like what you have, that is
probably a good next step. Nana did great once it was diagnosed and
treated with Isotretinoin (Accutane). Like you, we went through a
long, frustrating period of failed diagnostics and treatments before
we found out what was really going on. There are pics of her in the
photo album.

We also have some photos of pemphigus in the photo album. Dr.
Williams mentioned once in an archived post that a biopsy should
include fresh blisters (not dried-up scabs) in order to be useful for
finding this: http://ferrethealth.org/archive/SG390 This disease is
treated with steroids (pretty high doses).

On sarcoptic mange, I know you've looked high and low for mites
already. However, this form can be hard to find even on skin scrapes.
It is treated with Ivermectin. Here is a good article about this:

Good luck with Amber, and please keep us posted on how she is doing.

Best wishes,
-Pam S.
