Dera Jenni:

I had the opportunity to review the photos (a little difficult) and
review the possibilities given by our lay panel of experts (who
constantly amaze me with their astuteness) and others.

It is amazing how up people are on pemphigus (a consideration but not
high on the list) as there is little written on it and by
coincidence, I have been asked to contibute an article on it to
Ferrets magazine next week.

But back to Amber. First things first. She smacks of adrenal
disease - hair loss, especially on the feet, itchy, odd smell, etc.
She definitely needs to have surgery or at least start on some form
of medical treatment for the condition. I would like to see how many
of the signs go away. Some animals truly fall apart with adrenal
disease, and it could be that all of her signs, even the nails are
related.

The people who identified cutaneous lymphoma are also pretty good -
it often attacks the feet, causes them to be swollen, and lose the
nails. I would need better close-yup pictures of the feet to get a
better idea - but this si something that can be identified by a
biopsy of the affected red, swollen area, and this is probably worth
doing before you sign up for adrenal surgery.

Sarcoptic mange will often hit the feet, but we rarely see it in this
oucntries and the animals literally tear their feet apart - the
itching is so bad. You mention she is itchy, but not tearing at her
feet.

Selenium - I have never seen this in a ferret. I am not overly
familiar with the kibble that you mentioned, but if it is reltively
new and formulated for ferrets (or even cats) you are probably
getting the amount you need. Vitamin E tends to break down more
quickly, especially in food that is stored in a high temperature or
is old. I am familiar with the syndromes of selenium deficiency and
toxicosis in farm animals, but not really in carnivores.

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, dVM
