To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

The reason I was thinking selenium (Besides some similar problems) was
something the Vitalin mfr has on their website:

http://www.vitalin-nutrition.co.uk/ferret.htm

"Vitalin Ferret contains high levels of antioxidant vitamins and
minerals, including beta carotene, vitamin C, copper and organic
selenium to aid immunity and optimise fertility."

But there is no indication of HOW MUCH per serving or ounce there is in
the feed.

I've emailed them asking for specific amounts, time will tell if they
offer this info.

Yes, I realize a ferret isn't a horse, and I mentioned that this is
something not normally seen in carnivores. But Selenium toxicity MAY
present a problem.

There is next to nothing available showing what is the required level
of any nutrient for ferrets, not to mention what would be too much. And
selenium is one mineral that should be neither. Apparently for
herbivores OR Carnivores.

Since so many "Folks with ferret experience" often advise to feed a
ferret similarly to a cat, perhaps this info regarding selenium issues
in cats would help:

>From what her owner wrote, Amber has been through a myriad of tests and
still no real answers. So this may be a shot in the dark that grazes
the mark - who knows it may be the first documented case of such an
issue?

Ambers issues may also be something that is more typically seen in
ferrets like Dr. Williams noted too.

[Moderator's Note: Folks should, please, recall that we have too recently discussed and debated foods to do so now (as per a recent Moderators' Administrative Note), so any replies to this should stick specifically to information on nutrient levels as KIm has done in this post instead of debating the foods.]
