I think this is a good example on how not all vets may agree on
something. AND Deb probably had her vets advice based on her vet
knowing her level of skill and having seen her and her ferrets many
times before.

By now the ferret should have been to the vet.
If you are gentle, I suppose you can try to put back in, but it will
just come back out until underlying cause is identified and treated.
IN those that continue to prolapse without treatable cause, a purse
string kind of procedure can be done by the vet.

I wouldn't try any other treatments beyond local ointment and care,
until a vet sees this ferret and determines what can be causing the
problem Some people have pointed out that it could be abscessed anal
gland, or from diarrhea or other issues going on. The one I had was
from diarrhea. The diarrhea was eventually found to be caused by
treatment of my group for coccidia and underlying diabetes that I
didn't know he had until he went to the vet to find out why his
diarrhea was not better on the meds. It resolved on its own once the
diarrhea was gone. I had one with an abscessed anal gland and
although it pushed the anal area out from inside or on the side of the
anus, it doesn't usually cause the rectum to prolapse- if indeed that
is what this ferret has.

Hopefully the owner will let us know what the vet said.
