To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Lisa,
Last year we experienced the same thing. I had a 7 yr female with
insulinoma who had been on Pred for about 6 months. In a matter of
days she got very lethargic and then started having black, tarry
stools. It was a weekend and the vet was closed so we tried giving
her Pepto Bismul but by that time she was already vomiting blood
also. We had to let her pass. It was because she had severe gastric
ulcers that were bleeding out; probably caused by the pred (which is
tough on their tummies) and the general stress of being ill and age.

Like everyone above has pretty much already said, Carafate works
best for ulcers. You can get it from your vet, or if you start
seeing signs of an ulcer (grinding teeth, dark or black tarry poop,
discomfort when defecating) and can't make it to the vet, you can
also use store-bought Pepto Bismul (which doesn't work as well) or
Pepcid AC.

With the Pepcid AC tablets, we use the original strength 10mg
tablets (containing just the active ingredient Famotidine) and
dissolve one in 4.0 mLs of distilled water, then give 0.25 mLs of
that solution twice daily on an empty stomach. It settles on the
bottom of the container so before using it, shake well.
I hope I offered a some help. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss
of Cobb.

~Emily and the five
