Hi everyone. I have questions. I have a 23 month old male Marshall ferret named Clyde who has adrenal disease (developed in the last 6 weeks). I have a consultation with my vet set up for Friday this week. I am certainly going to have surgery for removal of the affected gland(s). My real concern is for after surgery. What treatments are currently recommended for prophylactic means of control after surgery? I have done a search through the archives here, the FML, and around the web. I understand the medical uses of Lupron Depot as well as Melatonin implants. Are these commonly used after surgery to help control symptoms, or in the case of Lupron Depot, Possibly slow the recurrence of the disease? Is their use after surgery together, or individually? What is the recommendation if individually, Lupron Depot or Melatonin implants? How often if Lupron Depot? (I have heard anywhere from ever 4-6 weeks (Obviously a monthly Depot) to once after surgery and annually
thereafter at breeding season with the 4 month Depot) I am assuming an uncomplicated unilateral removal here. The ball game changes with bilateral involvement.
I also wonder what are the rates of recurrence, and the typical time frame thereof? I also wonder about survival rates and length after treatment? I understand that in some cases recurrence will happen, and that sometimes the other gland will develop involvement as well after surgery. What have been the experiences of others with these problems? Did anyone have a good experience with surgery having curative effects? Bad?
I am sorry about the amount of questions, but I want to have as current research as possible. I know this place has a wealth of knowledge and want to have balanced info from all sides. Thank you!
Kristy
