Thanks again everyone, for the support. Bear has continued to improve
over the weekend, and has happily been eating his canned A/D and
drinking on his own. (He hasn't done this in about 6 weeks; we've had
to hand feed him food and water.) His appetite is definitely back,
and it definitely improves when he's off lasix. Truly, his life
returns to near-normal when we omit it. The vet was ready to put him
to sleep only four days ago because he couldn't stand up. Now he's
not only standing, but walking around, exploring, eating, and drinking
normally.

Heart disease is such a weird illness.

I'm going to look into the alternative med suggested by Pam, and the
ideas recommended by Sukie. :)
