Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Lupron as a preventative for adrenal recurrance-data?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I just thought I would add some things that I recently found out were
part of Dr. Bob Wagner's adrenal lecture disease lecture at the IFC symposium because
they address some of your questions. Dr. Wagner is studying several medications for
treatment of adrenal disease.

He noted that there is a 25% to 30% recurrence of symptoms post-surgically, usually 3 to
18 months later.

I hadn't realized that sometimes the tumor can be pheochromocytoma which can itself
cause cardiac problems, so that also is among the things I learned, and something I hope
to learn a great deal more about.

With Deslorelin there is much less change of developing a large tumor if treatment of an
existing adrenal tumor is with higher levels of the drug. (In the U.S. the needed implants
are not yet okayed by the government so are experimental only.)

Also, it was passed on to me that Dr. Bruce Williams pointed out that since the lungs
metabolize the gas that is usually used that pre-surgical blood tests are often not needed.
(We tend to also do them because we have been spared going in for some ferrets whose
blood values were so very off that we knew they didn't have the milder standard types of
pancreatic tumors (but with a nasty in the adrenal we certainly have had vets go in).

Live to learn and learn to live...
