Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Problems with the kits- General Supplementation of Kits
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I know this is an old thread (just starting to catch up), but just as
an fyi for anybody who has to supplement kits either as a breeder or
just a really young one from a pet store, a simple, easily available
milk replacer is powdered goat's milk. This is found in pretty much
all health food stores, and a lot of grocery stores.

NO, I am not saying it's the same or as good as ferret breast milk
(they especially need the colustrum from the first day or so), but I
have started kits as young as one week on it almost exclusively. It
seems to be more palatable than the "pet" formulas, though probably
doesn't have as many vitamins. I also use it quite often to add
protein and fat to liquified food for sick ferrets. The brand I get I
believe is Meyenberger (something like that) and I keep a can or they
also have I quart envelopes of powder around for emergencies. I
started my jills on it about a week before they gave birth, kept them
on it for a month or so, and started this group of kits on it at
about 4 weeks.

Val, not a vet!
