Subject: [ferrethealth] We're off to the vet's Monday Morning
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Last Sunday the kids & I went to a play day. En route I picked up
some "Arctic Mice" prepackaged/frozen for Josie and Fozzy munchies
along the way and for dinner while there. I also had some frozen CGH
too for Faylene.

To make a long story short Fozzy ate three of the four mice, Josie
never ate any. On tuesday Fozzy's deposits were soft and golden
yellow, by wednesday he had full blown diarhhea - very yellow and
watery.

I contacted our playmates to make certain no one there was ill. Only
Fozzy had these symptoms so I suspect a bad mouse started it all. I
wasn't impressed with the looks of the packaged mice and should have
listened to that teensy inner voice.

His appetite was still good, but drinking cool water caused him to
shake his head, gag and paw at the front of his mouth. Offering him
warm water, he'd still gag, but no head shaking or pawing. His teeth
have gotten considerably cleaner since his diet change but he does
have retained baby teeth that are definitely grey and have receding
gums surrounding them.

So I made a kibble mash mix with added bits of banana, he tasted but
said yuck. Then I made soup from cgh, livers and gizzards and duck
soup mix. He licked a bit of this, but not whole heartedly. Offered
him a fresh mouse, he dispatched it quickly, crunched it, but only
ate the head. The next couple days he had a selection of gizzards,
kibble, mice, mash, soup mix and warm water to choose from.

His deposits began to solidify to a pudding consistency and went from
yellow gold tan to brownish green. His activity level hasn't altered.
Faylene and Josie seemed fine. Today I called the vet (Saturday) and
they said they were too swamped to see im today, but to give him 1/4
teaspoon of Pepto Bismol 3 to 4 times a day and they'd call on Monday.

That was at 11:30 this morning. But by 2pm Faylene started the
squirts too. While Fozzy's deposits have actually begun to regain
form.

>From what I've been reading and discussing they may have a couple
different things. Coccidia being one, but while the diarhhea has an
odor - it isn't really "fishy" smelling. Helicobactor but there isn't
any real indication of ulcer.

Fozzy's deposits changed almost immediately after receiving the Pepto
bismol - but I've been informed that may just be a mask of other
things.

I'm giving both of them Pepto Bismol until Monday morning. Josie
seems fine (so far). Nobody seems to be totally off their feed, or
lethargic, and all are drinking well still. I am concerned, but not
excessively worried.

Monday should prove interesting. Suggestions, ideas, expereinces
welcome!

Regards, Kim
