Subject: [ferrethealth] Mojave- unusual
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

It has been debated for some time on this list as to wheter or not
my ferret, Mojave has adrenal disease and an enlarged prostate.

I found a friend who took me to see an exotics specialist on
Thursday who, upon hearing the signs, thought as everyone else does
on this list that it is adrenal disease. However, when I told him
the Lupron Depot, Melatonin, and Propecia had no effect he thought
that was really strange and told me he'd like to do another
ultrasound. He said that this ultrasound is state of the art and is
a lot more sensitive than the one that Mojave had.

He asked me how long ago it was that Mojave had the Lupron because
he said it might have made the prostate shrink a little. When I told
him it was about 2 1/2 weeks ago he didn't think it should effect
the results that much.

The results of the ultrasound shocked this vet. Everything looked
perfect. Adrenals were normal size, bladder walls were thin, and his
prostate was normal and had no fluid buildup and the walls were thin.

He was stumped. He said he sees several ferrets a day and has never
come across this before.

He was guessing that maybe it's an inflammation somewhere and put
Mojave on .07 ml Metacam for 7 days and told me to call him in 5
days and let me know how he's doing. He said that if the Metacam
didn't work we'd have to try flushing out his bladder. If that
didn't work he said he'd like to do another ultrasound in a couple
of months and if that still didn't reveal anything that he'd have to
perform exploratory surgery. He reminded me that it is an invasive
procedure and would rather not do it unless it's necessary. I've
always agreed with that.

Now as time goes on Mojave is starting to act listless especially
for the past couple of days. When he's out he mostly lies there and
really doesn't want to play and this morning when I took him out of
his cage to see how he's doing he just laid on my shoulder not
moving like he was sleeping. When I put him back in the cage he went
right to bed.

He is still urinating the same amount and frequency as is normal. No
changes whatsoever.

Now I'm beginning to get nervous.
